Vocation: The Call to Fulfillment and Resisting Temptation
How to Persevere on Your Vocational Journey in the Face of Difficulties and Temptations, Inspired by Faith and a Positive Attitude
Vocation is much more than a professional choice; it is a profound calling that resonates in the innermost core of the human being. It comes from the Latin vocatio, meaning “call,” and reflects the desire to respond to a higher purpose. In the Christian context, vocation is understood as a divine invitation to live in accordance with God’s plan for each person, whether in the priesthood, religious life, marriage, or lay commitment.
Vocation as a Path to Holiness
Pope Francis has emphasized that vocation is a free and loving response to God, who invites us to live in holiness in the state of life to which we have been called. This perspective reminds us that every vocation is a path toward human and spiritual fulfillment, and that holiness is not reserved for a select few, but is accessible to all in their daily lives.
Temptations of the Devil: Obstacles on the Vocational Path
On the journey toward the full realization of our vocation, we inevitably encounter temptations that seek to divert our attention and distance us from divine purpose. These temptations, according to Pope Francis, can manifest themselves in various ways:
-
Attachment to material things : The excessive pursuit of material goods can divert the heart from its orientation toward God and others.
-
Distrust : Doubt about one’s own ability or about God’s faithfulness can generate insecurity and paralysis.
-
Thirst for power : The desire for control and dominance can corrupt the original intention of serving God and others.
These temptations are not new; already in Jesus’ life, the devil tried to divert him from his divine mission in the desert. However, Jesus resisted, using the Scriptures and trusting completely in the Father’s will.
Attitude as a Tool of Resistance
Víctor Küppers, a renowned speaker and trainer, emphasizes the importance of attitude in daily life. According to Küppers, “the attitude you have is the attitude you want.” This perspective is crucial in the vocational context, as a positive and determined attitude can be the key to overcoming the difficulties and temptations that arise along the way.
Küppers also emphasizes the importance of kindness, joy, and simplicity in professional and personal life. These values not only enrich everyday life but also strengthen commitment to one’s chosen vocation, helping to maintain focus on divine purpose.
Spiritual Tools to Overcome Temptations
In the face of temptations that seek to divert our vocation, the Church offers various spiritual tools:
-
Constant Prayer : Daily communication with God strengthens faith and provides clarity in times of uncertainty.
-
Sacraments : Participation in the Eucharist and reconciliation offer grace and strength to resist temptations.
-
Intercession of the Saints : Invoking saints such as Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Teresa of Avila, or Saint Joseph can provide spiritual support in times of struggle.
-
Communal Discernment : Guidance from spiritual guides and participation in faith communities help keep one on track in one’s vocation.
Vocation as a Path to Fulfillment
Vocation is a divine call to live fully according to God’s plan. Although the path may be marked by temptations and challenges, divine grace, a positive attitude, and spiritual tools are essential for perseverance. By maintaining focus on divine purpose and trusting in God’s help, it is possible to overcome difficulties and live a life full and faithful to the vocation received.
