The Wealth of the Heart and the Word
Linguistic Intelligence and Spirituality

Last Sunday, we heard Jesus speak about the richness of the heart and how it is reflected in our words. This teaching establishes a direct relationship between the heart and speech, highlighting the importance of linguistic intelligence, which is the ability to use language accurately and effectively.
Linguistic intelligence allows us to narrate intimate experiences, reflect, compare, and summarize events. It is fundamental for the person since it is directly linked to the use of language and reason. Dyslexia, for example, makes learning difficult by affecting the ability to read correctly, which underlines the importance of the word in our lives.
Logotherapy, a branch of psychology and psychiatry, recognizes the deep connection between the word and the person. This relationship extends beyond reason and the person, also encompassing spiritual life. In Christianity, the word is central, since Jesus Christ is considered the Word, the word of the Father. Christian prayer is distinguished by being a dialogue between two freedoms, an encounter where the word is given and received.
However, we live in a time of crisis of the word. The dominant relativism and the trivialization of the word through the internet and social networks have led to superficial communication and the loss of depth in our conversations. This affects not only our personal and social relationships, but also our relationship with God. The inability to understand the language of the Bible and to reflect on our spiritual experiences is a direct consequence of this crisis.
To face this situation, it is essential to give the word the dignity it deserves again. This involves helping others find the words that reflect what they have in their hearts and to express their experiences accurately. Listening and witnessing are two key exercises to achieve this. Listening involves paying attention to the person, not just to their problem, and helping them express what they really feel. Witnessing, on the other hand, involves sharing our own experiences in an authentic way, making ourselves vulnerable and allowing the Holy Spirit to act through us.
This Lent, we are invited to practice the charity of the word, helping others find the words that flow from their hearts and sharing our own experiences in authentic ways. This will not only enrich our personal and social relationships, but will also strengthen our connection with God.
