I’m going to ask you a question: imagine that you meet all the requirements, that you go on a pilgrimage, that you cross the Holy Door, whether it’s in St. Peter’s or in the cathedral of your city. You’ve already gained the plenary indulgence. But what if you sin again? We’re all going to continue sinning until the last day of our lives.
I’m talking about mortal sin, beloved sin, and serious sin. If you give in to hedonism, materialism, and comfort, and move away from God a little bit again, then have you understood the meaning of the Jubilee Year?
The indulgence is not the end, but the means
The plenary indulgence is a great gift from God, but the true goal is to achieve holiness. There may be people who have never gained a plenary indulgence but have lived in holiness. Why do you want the plenary indulgence? Remember: love buries countless sins.
How to achieve holiness?
Basically, there are six steps:
- Always seek God. Holiness is not just doing good, it is not just behaving correctly. True holiness is seeking God in daily prayer and the sacraments. That is the way.
- Live with love. Love covers everything. Forgive everything, but without falling into permissiveness. With children, with workers, with your husband or wife, there are times when it is necessary to demand. But always do it with love. Your words, your gestures, your looks must reflect that love.
- Be humble. Recognize your limits, admit your mistakes and, at times, give in for the sake of peace. Of course, in matters of faith and morality, it is not about giving in. There are situations in which one cannot negotiate, such as the defense of life. However, in the small things of everyday life, it is essential to learn to give in.
- Persevere in faith. Don’t give up when difficult times come. Many, when faced with difficulties, doubt God, but true faith is strengthened by trial. Don’t lose hope.
- Be an example for others. It’s not about boasting about holiness, but about living it consistently. Jesus told us: You are the light of the world, the salt of the earth. Let your life reflect that light for others.
