The Sorrow of the Flight to Egypt and the Joy of the Overthrow of the Idols
Fifth Sunday of St. Joseph
The fifth Sunday focuses on the pain of Saint Joseph upon receiving the angelic order to flee to Egypt to save Jesus from Herod, facing an arduous journey and exile (Mt 2:13-14).
His joy is manifested in seeing the prophecy fulfilled “Out of Egypt I called my son” and, according to tradition, in witnessing the fall of Egyptian idols in the presence of Jesus (Is 19:1).
Saint John Chrysostom praises the trust of Saint Joseph, who did not question the divine promise despite the contradictions.
This meditation teaches us to flee from sin and overthrow idols in our hearts.
Prayer
O most vigilant Guardian of the incarnate Son of God, glorious Saint Joseph! Great was your work in sustaining and serving the Son of the Most High, particularly in the flight to Egypt; but great also was your joy in always having God himself with you and seeing the idols of Egypt fall to the ground.
Through this pain and this joy, grant us the grace to turn away from the infernal tyrant, fleeing from dangerous occasions; may all idols of earthly affections fall from our hearts, and, occupied in the service of Jesus and Mary, may we live for them alone and die meekly.
