The Saint of Life and Joy
Saint John Paul II

Saint John Paul II left an indelible mark on the history of the Church and the world. His staunch defense of the right to life, his contagious joy, and his exceptional communicative ability make him one of the most emblematic figures of the 20th century. His pontificate, which spanned almost 27 years, was marked by his tireless evangelizing work and his overwhelming charisma, with which he won the hearts of millions of people around the world.
Defender of the Right to Life
From the beginning of his pontificate, John Paul II made the defense of life one of his main priorities. His encyclical Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), published in 1995, reaffirmed the value and inviolability of human life, denouncing abortion, euthanasia, and other threats to human dignity. In it, he proclaimed that life is a sacred gift that must be protected from conception to natural death.
A particularly significant moment in his defense of the right to life occurred on November 2, 1982, during his first trip to Spain. In Madrid’s Plaza de Lima, before nearly two million people, the Polish Pope delivered an impassioned speech in which he reaffirmed the indissolubility of marriage and the right of parents to educate their children according to their moral and religious convictions. With a firm voice full of conviction, he declared, “The death of an innocent person can never be legitimized!” These words, spoken in a turbulent social and political context, still resonate strongly in the conscience of many Christians today.
Joy as a hallmark
Saint John Paul II was not only a staunch defender of life, but also a living testimony of Christian joy. Despite having lived through times of war, persecution, and illness, he never lost his smile or his hope. His charisma and enthusiasm were palpable in his encounters with people of all ages and cultures, especially young people, whom he considered the future of the Church.
From his early years as Pope, he established a very close relationship with young people, which materialized in the creation of World Youth Days (WYD), mass events in which he shared moments of prayer, reflection, and joy with them. On many occasions, he was seen singing, laughing, and even joking with them, displaying a vitality and a jovial spirit that endeared him to millions of people.
A testament to this side of the Pope can be found in the meetings he held with participants in the UNIV International University Congress. At these gatherings, held in the Vatican every Easter Sunday, songs were sung, people danced, and humorous performances were performed in a festive atmosphere that reflected his closeness to young people.
An Exceptional Communicator
Another of Saint John Paul II’s great virtues was his extraordinary communicative ability. He spoke with clarity, depth, and emotion, connecting with people of different ages, cultures, and languages. His command of languages (it is said he was fluent in at least ten) and his personal charisma made him a close, accessible, and beloved Pope throughout the world.
But his communication went beyond words: his gestures, his expressiveness, and his way of looking at things conveyed a message of love and hope. He knew how to address young people, the sick, politicians, and those most in need, adapting his language and message to each situation, but always with the same authenticity and evangelizing power.
One of the most striking examples of his communicative talent was the meeting he held with young people at World Youth Day in Toronto in 2002, in which he encouraged them not to be afraid and to open wide the doors to Christ. In that speech, with a firm and moving voice, he uttered his now famous phrase: “Do not be afraid!“, which became a motto of his pontificate.
A legacy that endures
The legacy of Saint John Paul II lives on in the Church and in the world. His life’s witness, his unwavering defense of human dignity, his unwavering joy, and his gift for communicating the message of Christ continue to be a source of inspiration for millions of people.
Through his example, he taught us that faith and reason are not mutually exclusive, that life is a sacred gift that we must protect, and that true joy is found only in God.
May his intercession help us to follow his example and bring to the world the message of love, life, and hope that he proclaimed with such fervor.
Saint John Paul II, pray for us.
