The Pope: Illness makes us more aware that we are not alone

A call to rediscover solidarity and Christian love in caring for the sick and those who accompany them

On January 14, 2025, Pope Francis released his message for the 33rd World Day of the Sick, whose central theme is “Let us care for one another,” inspired by the words of Saint Paul: “The love of Christ urges us on” (2 Cor 5:14). This universal call invites us to live compassion as a concrete expression of the Christian faith and to strengthen mutual care, especially towards the most vulnerable.

In his speech, the Holy Father stressed the importance of understanding illness not only as a moment of fragility but as an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of solidarity. “When we care for a sick person, we are recognizing the face of Christ in his suffering,” he said. In this way, the Pope highlighted the centrality of human care, recognizing the dignity of each person even in the most difficult moments.

The figure of the Good Samaritan

Francis highlighted the parable of the Good Samaritan as a model of active compassion. He pointed out that, like the man who stopped to help a stranger who was wounded on the road, we are all called to be witnesses of God’s merciful love. “Suffering must never be faced in solitude; we must build communities of solidarity, capable of accompanying and supporting those who suffer,” he said.

Recognition for professionals and caregivers

The Pope’s message also included words of gratitude and encouragement for health professionals, volunteers and family members who accompany the sick. “It is they who, with their daily dedication, illuminate the lives of those who face illness. Their dedication is a testimony that love can transform any reality,” he said.

A call to the entire Church

Francis recalled that the Church has an essential mission in the care of the sick. He insisted on the need to strengthen pastoral services in hospitals and homes, promoting spaces where dignity is respected, and spiritual comfort is offered. He also urged the faithful to be active agents of hope: “No one should feel abandoned in their suffering. We can all do something, however small, to alleviate the pain of others.”

In his message, Pope Francis invites us to reflect on how we live compassion and Christian love in our daily lives. The World Day of the Sick 2025 is presented as an opportunity to renew our commitment to caring for our neighbors, especially the weakest.

In the words of the Holy Father: “The love we receive from God impels us to go out to meet others, especially those who need it most. Let us not be afraid to be Samaritans today.”

This message reminds us that, in caring for the sick, we find not only an act of service, but a way of living the faith authentically.
