The Love of God: More Than an Explanation
There are no shortcuts: God's love is lived day by day
God’s love cannot be explained; it can only be experienced. This statement, which has surely been shared by many saints and believers, invites us to reflect on the difference between knowing doctrine and living the faith.
We can explain morality, the commandments, and faith: why we shouldn’t lie, steal, kill, or covet; why we should love God and honor our parents. We can even give reasons for fidelity in marriage, respect for life, and perseverance in goodness. However, God’s love transcends any rational explanation.
There is no “shortcut” to experiencing it. Three days of practice, or simple spiritual exercises, are not enough. Experiencing God’s love is a lifelong journey: a way of thinking, praying, and living that transforms a person from within. Those who have experienced it, despite their flaws and weaknesses, recognize that this love is invaluable and strive for continual improvement.
Until we experience it, God’s love remains merely a given: “God exists, they say he does.” But how can we explain the wonder of nature, the perfection of animal instincts, the harmony of the planets, or the incredible intelligence of bees? Everything points to a Creator. However, understanding this with the mind is not the same as feeling it in the heart.
Many people look for shortcuts: pills to lose weight, to learn languages, or to find divine love effortlessly. They don’t exist. Experiencing God’s love requires perseverance, dedication, and an open heart.
Let us do all the good we can, let us seek to live with faith, and let the experience of God’s love transform our lives. As Father Ángel Espinosa says: “Let us do all the good we can, and may God bless you always.”
