The Regnum Christi Federation announces that the Holy See has definitively approved its Statutes, thus consolidating its identity and mission within the Church. The approval was granted by the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
In a letter, the Dicastery expresses its desire that “the Statutes help them to promote the common charism and to encourage collaboration in view of the mission entrusted to them by the Church.” This recognition gives solidity and stability to Regnum Christi, while allowing for future evaluations and modifications in accordance with the experience and development of the charism.
A path of renewal and consolidation
The final approval of the Statutes is the result of a renewal process initiated in 2010, with the aim of clearly expressing the unity of the charism shared by the Legionaries of Christ, the Consecrated Women, the Lay Consecrated Men and the lay associates. As a result of this journey, on May 31, 2019, the Holy See canonically erected the Regnum Christi Federation and approved its Statutes “ad experimentum,” granting a five-year period for their implementation and evaluation.
During this period, the Federation has grown in unity and collaboration, strengthening its structures and deepening the experience of its charism and mission. In this context, the 2024 Regnum Christi General Convention evaluated the implementation of the Statutes and confirmed that they adequately express the identity and functioning of the Federation, concluding that they do not require modifications at this time. Based on this evaluation, the General Convention requested the Holy See to definitively approve the text.
Meaning and implications
This recognition by the Holy See represents support for the mission of Regnum Christi and reinforces the commitment of all its members to live their charism with fidelity and dedication. The Statutes, in addition to offering a legal and organizational framework, are a fundamental reference for the spiritual and apostolic identity of the Federation.
“The official recognition reaffirms the validity of the path taken and strengthens our commitment to live with confidence and courage the mission that God has entrusted to us,” the General Board of Directors emphasized in a letter addressed to the members of Regnum Christi. It also stressed that the Statutes are “light and criterion of discernment” for the being and acting of all those who are part of this spiritual family.
In the framework of the Jubilee of Hope that the Church will celebrate in 2025, this step invites the members of Regnum Christi to continue growing in the experience of the charism and in their commitment to the evangelizing mission.
