The heart of the Church beats between mourning and hope

While the world's cardinals gather around the future of the Church, the faithful celebrate the Novendiaries for the soul of Pope Francis

The heart of the Church beats between mourning and hope

St. Peter’s Basilica has become the epicenter of grief and faith in recent days. Since the passing of Pope Francis, the universal Church has immersed itself in a profound spiritual contemplation, marked by constant prayer, grateful memory, and a confident look to the future.

As is tradition in the Apostolic See, the Novendiaries—nine consecutive days of Masses in remembrance of the deceased Pontiff—are being celebrated with intense participation by the People of God. Each day brings together the faithful, religious, authorities, and members of the diplomatic corps around the altar of the Confession of St. Peter. The singing of the Requiem aeternam is intertwined with supplications for the eternal rest of Pope Francis, while proclaiming his spiritual legacy: a Church that is closer, poorer, and freer.

At the same time, the world’s cardinals, from every continent, gather in Rome to begin the General Congregations. This time of discernment, dialogue, and prayer seeks to prepare for the next conclave in an atmosphere of communion, serenity, and historical responsibility. In the second Congregation, held in the New Synod Hall, 112 cardinals participated, addressing organizational issues and hearing interventions that shed light on the Church’s current moment.

The names, faces, and cultures that intertwine in these days in the Eternal City bear witness to the catholicity of the Church and its mission: to proclaim the Gospel to the world in unity, in diversity. As the world watches with anticipation, Christians live this time with the certainty that the Holy Spirit guides the Church, even in moments of transition.

Prayer, in these days, has become the common language of the Church: for the soul of Pope Francis, for the cardinals who must elect his successor, and for the future of Christianity in a world thirsting for truth, peace, and hope.
