Thanksgiving Day is one of the most significant and cherished holidays in the United States, and it is increasingly celebrated around the world. On this day, families gather, often traveling long distances, to share a special meal and give thanks for the blessings received throughout the year.

Historical Origins and Meaning

The origins of Thanksgiving Day date back to 1623 in Massachusetts, where English settlers held a feast to thank God for their harvests and the fruits of their labor. While today many families have lost the original religious meaning of the celebration, the values of love, togetherness, and reconciliation remain at the heart of this holiday.

Traditions and Customs

One of the most iconic traditions of Thanksgiving Day is the oven-roasted turkey, which has become the main dish in most households. This meal is not only a feast but also a symbol of abundance and gratitude.

Daily Gratitude: A Call to Reflection

However, beyond traditions and history, the true spirit of Thanksgiving Day lies in gratitude. For many, like Father Ángel Espinosa de los Monteros, gratitude should not be confined to a single day of the year. In his words, “Every day of the year is Thanksgiving Day.”

He invites us to thank God daily, upon waking and before going to bed, for the small and great blessings we continuously receive. We do not need to wait for a special day to express our gratitude. Every day offers opportunities to thank God for our life, work, relationships, and the countless blessings we receive.

A Relationship of Gratitude with God

Our relationship with God can be summed up in one word: “Thanks.” Recognizing the vastness of His love and grace leads us to an attitude of continuous humility and gratitude. We cannot compare or compete with His way of loving, but we can reciprocate with sincere thankfulness.

Thanksgiving Day is more than an annual celebration; it is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of gratitude in our daily lives. As Father Ángel reminds us, “Let us do all the good we can, and may God always bless us.” Let us live each day with a grateful heart, acknowledging the blessings God constantly gives us.

May this Thanksgiving Day inspire us to live with gratitude every day of the year. Happy Thanksgiving Day!
