Sin is a credit card

Father Angel Espinosa de los Monteros

I want to share with you a reflection that can help us make more conscious decisions in our lives.

Often, sin is a lot like a credit card: it invites you to enjoy now and pay later. Like travel agencies that promise you a trip today and long-term payments, sin promises immediate pleasure, but the consequences come eventually, and often with high interest.

I remember a famous advertising campaign that offered “travel now and pay later.” At the time, it seemed like a great proposition. But, when you start paying, sometimes for years, you realize that the debt accumulates, and the initial enjoyment becomes a heavy burden. That’s how sin is: it appears attractive and easy, but over time, its consequences catch up with us.

It is important to remember that sin, like a credit card debt, does not forgive us or grant us indulgences. There is no escape from consequences, and what at first seemed harmless can end up ruining important aspects of our lives. The price can be the loss of our peace, our relationships, or even our own dignity.

For example, let’s think about the people who in their youth chose easy paths: drugs, debauchery, lying. At the time, it all seemed like fun and freedom. But where are those people now? Many have lost opportunities, families, and even their own lives.

I have met people who have come to me, broken inside and out, with stories that began decades ago, when they made wrong decisions. What began as a search for immediate pleasure ended up being a burden they carry for years.

Sin is deceptive. It promises quick satisfaction, but what it doesn’t tell you is that the bill will come, sooner or later. Think about the decisions you make today: are they right? Are they wrong? Every action has consequences, and it is essential to think before acting.

Dear friends, let us not allow sin to deceive us and make us pay too high a price for a fleeting pleasure. Let us do all the good we can, let us think before we act, and may God always bless us.
