In Ancient Greece, there was a proverb that said: “When a pottery vessel breaks, no matter how hard you try to fix it, no matter how hard you glue it, you can see the scars.” This wise saying is not just about objects, but about something much deeper: the human heart.
The Greek author who wrote these words did not intend to teach us how to repair a broken vessel. He knew that many of them would never be useful again. Instead, his message was clear: “When you break the heart of a man or a woman, no matter how hard you try to fix it, the scars will always be there.”
Conflict in relationships
In love, whether in courtship or marriage, conflicts are bound to arise. We are different: men and women, with different ways of thinking, acting, and feeling. Our hormones, our experiences, and our realities make us unique. Therefore, it is normal for there to be disagreements.
But here is the key: “It is okay to fight, but with love and for love.” Violence, insults, and hurtful words leave wounds that, like in ceramic pots, cannot be completely repaired.
Advice: fight with love
My advice is simple: argue, fight, look for the best for your relationship, but never hurt each other. Do not insult each other, do not trample on each other. This applies not only in marriage, but also with children, parents and siblings.
If you have to tell someone they are wrong, do it with the best words and the best gestures. Do not break their heart, because you will not be able to repair it.
Forgiveness and scars
I remember the case of a man who committed infidelity. To compensate, he gave his wife a $15,000 ring and a bouquet of 80 red roses. But you know what? None of that cancels out the pain caused. Neither the most expensive ring nor the most luxurious dinner can erase the scars of a broken heart.
Let us do good
Earthen vessels, even if you glue them together, will always show their scars. The same goes for the heart. Therefore, in every discussion, in every conflict, let us act with love. Let us not stoop to the lowest point of ourselves. On the contrary, let us rise and always seek the good.
