Pope sent his condolences to the people of Hungary

Pope Francis sent his condolences to the people of Hungary following the death of László Sólyom, former president of the Republic from 2005 to 2010.

In a telegram sent to Hungarian President Katalin Novák, the Pope expressed his sadness at Sólyom’s death and highlighted his commitment to democracy and human rights.

“I receive with sadness the news of the death of the former president of Hungary, László Sólyom,” the Pope wrote. “I express my sincere condolences to his family, friends and the people of Hungary.

“Mr Sólyom was a man of great integrity and commitment to democracy and human rights. His service to his country was an example to us all.”

The Pope also recalled Sólyom’s role as a defender of religious freedom.

I EARNESTLY ASK THE LORD TO WELCOME THE DECEASED IN PEACE AND TO GIVE ALL THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY HIS DEATH, ESPECIALLY HIS FAMILY, THE COMFORT OF HOPE. GOD BLESS HUNGARY AND ALL ITS PEOPLE.
