Pope Leo XIV Urges World Leaders to Seek Solutions for Peace
In Castel Gandolfo, the Pontiff renewed his call for dialogue and an Easter truce, with special reference to President Trump's declaration and his upcoming trip to Spain
At the end of his weekly day of rest, Pope Leo XIV addressed reporters outside the Villa Barberini and issued a renewed appeal for peace in a world marked by conflict and suffering. The Pontiff invited all world leaders to “return to the table for dialogue” and seek “solutions” that will reduce violence.
In his remarks, the Holy Father made explicit reference to the recent words of US President Donald Trump. “I have been informed that President Trump recently declared that he wants to end the war. We hope that he is looking for a way out, that he is looking for a way to reduce the violence and the bombings, which would be a significant contribution to eliminating the hatred that is being generated and that continues to grow steadily in the Middle East and elsewhere,” he stated.
Just days before Easter, Leo XIV reminded everyone that this should be “the holiest and most sacred time of the year. It is a time of peace, a time of deep reflection.” However, he lamented the current situation: “As we all know, once again in the world, in many places, we are seeing so much suffering, so many deaths, even of innocent children.” “We continually call for peace, but sadly many people want to promote hatred, violence, and war,” he added.
The Pope made a special appeal to Christians to live these days “recognizing that Christ is still crucified today, that Christ continues to suffer today in the innocent, especially those who suffer from violence, hatred, and war.” He invited everyone to pray for the victims: “Let us pray for them, for the victims of war, let us pray that there may truly be a new and renewed peace, one that can give new life to all.” He also expressed his hope for a possible truce by Easter.
During the press conference, Leo XIV also spoke about his decision to personally carry the cross at the 14 Stations of the Cross on Good Friday at the Roman Colosseum. “I believe it will be an important sign because of what the Pope represents: a spiritual leader in the world today, this voice that says that Christ still suffers. And I also carry all these sufferings in my prayers.” He urged “all people of good will, all people of faith, to walk together, to walk with Christ who suffered for us, to give us salvation, and for us also to try to be bearers of peace.”
The Pope also answered a question about his apostolic journey to Spain, scheduled for June 6-12, 2026. “Faith, much love, hospitality, and a warm welcome are always present. I have been visiting Spain for over 40 years, and I have always found a people of great faith and goodwill. Let us celebrate this also on this visit,” he said affectionately.
