Pope Leo XIV received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the papal residence of Castel Gandolfo to discuss the war in Ukraine and the return of Ukrainian children
Pope Leo XIV received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the papal residence of Castel Gandolfo on the morning of December 9.
The Holy See Press Office issued a statement describing the cordial meeting, in which discussions focused primarily on the war in Ukraine. During the talks, the Pope reiterated the importance of continued dialogue and once again emphasized his “urgent hope that the ongoing diplomatic efforts will lead to a just and lasting peace.”
The two heads of state also discussed the issue of prisoners of war, calling for guarantees for the safe return of Ukrainian children to their families.
Exactly five months ago, the president met with Pope Leo at the Castel Gandolfo residence for a private audience, during which similar topics were discussed.
At the July meeting, Pope Leo —elected just two months earlier to the papacy— expressed his sorrow for the victims of the war and assured the people of Ukraine of his continued prayers for them.
