Pope Francis strengthens support for large families

Monthly bonus and increase in parental leave: the Pontiff’s concrete actions to enhance the role of families in society

Pope Francis has launched an important initiative aimed at supporting large families working in the Governorate of Vatican City State. Starting from January 1, 2025, permanent employees with three or more children will be able to receive a monthly bonus of 300 euros per child. This financial support will be available until the children turn 18 or complete their regular school year, with a maximum of 24 years, provided that the required documentation is presented.

In addition, the Pontiff has decided to extend parental leave from three to five days, a gesture that underlines his commitment to work-life balance. These measures respond to the Pope’s desire to strengthen the role of families in building a more supportive and humane society.

On several occasions, the Holy Father has stressed that large families are a true “treasure” for society, as they foster essential values such as generosity, cohesion, and sharing in a world often dominated by individualism. These actions not only seek to alleviate the economic burden of these families but also to recognize their work in transmitting fundamental values for the common good.

With this concrete gesture, Pope Francis invites all institutions to value and support families as the fundamental nucleus of society. This effort reinforces his call to promote family policies prioritizing all its members’ well-being and integral development.

In a global context where the birth rate continues to decline, and many families face economic challenges, these measures by the Vatican offer an inspiring example for other governments and entities to reflect on the importance of strengthening the family fabric as the basis for a more just and supportive society.
