Pope Francis’ audience with King Letsie III of Lesotho, held on 18 October 2023, was a significant event for both parties. The Pope and the King had the opportunity to discuss a number of issues of mutual interest, including cooperation between the Catholic Church and the government of Lesotho, the situation of refugees in the country, and the promotion of peace and reconciliation in the region.
Pope Francis expressed his appreciation for the role of the Catholic Church in Lesotho, highlighting its commitment to education, health and social development. King Letsie III thanked the Pope for his support for Lesotho, and expressed his hope that cooperation between the Catholic Church and the government of Lesotho will continue in the future.
In addition to issues of mutual interest, the Pope and the King also exchanged gifts. The Pope presented the King with a majolica depicting a statue of St. Peter benedict with St. Peter’s Basilica in the background. The King presented the Pope with a traditional Lesotho cloak.

This morning, the Holy Father Francis received in audience His Majesty the King of Lesotho, Letsie III, who subsequently met with His Eminence Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, accompanied by His Excellency Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.
During the cordial talks, the parties discussed the good existing relations between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Lesotho, highlighting the significant contribution of the local Church.
Finally, mention was made of international issues of common interest, especially the conflicts in Ukraine and in the Holy Land, as well as the political, climatic and security situation in the region of Southern Africa.
