Pope Francis praises gendarmes: “Angels who never leave us alone”

Pope Francis celebrated a mass in honor of St. Michael the Archangel, patron of the Vatican Gendarmerie Corps, on October 5 in St. Peter’s Basilica. During his homily, the Holy Father highlighted the crucial role of the gendarmes, comparing them to angels who protect and serve the community.

A call to tenderness

“I pray to God to always grant you the grace to be a reflection of his tenderness,” said Francis. This was one of the Pope’s main messages during the mass, where he deeply thanked the gendarmes for their work and asked their families for forgiveness for the absences necessary due to service.

The fight against evil

Pope Francis stressed the importance of the constant fight against evil, a reality that we all face daily. However, he recalled that we are not alone in this battle, as angels, especially St. Michael the Archangel, have the task of defending us from evil. “The devil always tries to destroy man by presenting things as if they were good, but his intention is destructive,” warned the Pope.

An invaluable service

The Vatican Gendarmerie plays a fundamental role in welcoming pilgrims and protecting the extraterritorial areas of the Vatican. “Often, you are the first and only face that visitors encounter,” noted Francis, highlighting the importance of their work as a tangible representation of God’s tenderness and protection.

Gratitude to the families

The Pope also dedicated words of gratitude to the families of the gendarmes, recognizing the sacrifice that their patience and understanding entails. “I know that it is not easy and that is why I entrust your families and all your loved ones to the protection of Our Lady, Queen of Families, and to St. Michael the Archangel,” said Francis.

Unity above conflict

In his homily, the Holy Father also reflected on the importance of unity, urging those present to always seek harmony above any conflict. “Unity is superior to conflict, always,” he said.

The Pope concluded his address with a prayer that the Lord grant the Vatican Gendarmerie “wisdom and patience” and allow them to maintain their sense of humor in their noble mission.

Additional note

This event underlines Pope Francis’ dedication to those who, often silently and constantly, protect and serve the Church and its faithful. The celebration not only honored the gendarmes, but also reinforced the importance of unity and tenderness in Christian life.
