Pope Francis begins 46th Apostolic Journey to Luxembourg and Belgium

Pope Francis is already on his way to Luxembourg, the first country he will visit on his 46th apostolic journey, headed to the “heart of Western Europe.” Before leaving, the Pontiff greeted a group of homeless people at Casa Santa Marta, accompanied by Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, Almoner of His Holiness.

The Pope’s plane took off from Rome at 8:29 a.m. on Thursday, September 26. In Luxembourg, the Holy Father has several activities scheduled, including meetings with authorities and the local Catholic community. After his stay in Luxembourg, Francis will head to Belgium, where he will end his trip in Brussels. He is expected to return to Rome on the evening of Sunday, September 29.

At this week’s general audience, Pope Francis asked for prayers for the success of his trip: “I will leave for Luxembourg and Belgium. I ask you to pray for me and the fruits of this journey to the heart of Western Europe.”

A Special Meeting Before Departure

Shortly after 7:00 a.m., a group of about ten homeless men and women, who usually take shelter at night under the colonnade of St. Peter’s Square or in the streets nearby, had the opportunity to greet Pope Francis before his departure. This emotional meeting was organized by Cardinal Krajewski and took place at the Casa Santa Marta, where the Pontiff resides.

A Message of Peace and Hope

As is customary, Pope Francis sent a telegram to the President of Italy upon leaving the country. In his message, he expressed his greetings and stated his intention to bring a message of peace and hope to Luxembourg and Belgium.

This apostolic journey not only underlines the Pope’s closeness to those most in need, but also his ongoing effort to promote peace and hope throughout the world, especially in the heart of Western Europe.
