Pope Francis at Gemelli: Respiratory therapy and physiotherapy continues
Update March 4, 2025

Francis continues his respiratory therapy and physiotherapy. Morning dedicated to rest and prayer.
“The Pope slept all night, now he continues his rest.” This was announced by the Holy See Press Office in its communication to journalists this Tuesday morning, March 4, 2025.
The Holy See Press Office reports that the Pope continues his respiratory therapy and physiotherapy. He has resumed high-flow ventilation (i.e. non-mechanical) with the use of nasal oxygen plugs.
The morning was dedicated to rest and prayer. The situation currently seems stable in a complex situation. As is known, the Pope was accompanied by doctors from the Governorate of Vatican City and a group of doctors from the Gemelli Polyclinic.
Last night, the usual medical bulletin reported “two episodes of acute respiratory failure, caused by a significant accumulation of endo bronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm” that was aspirated on both occasions; an accumulation that is the consequence of pneumonia. “The two crises were caused by the reaction of the bronchi trying to expel the mucus that accumulates to eliminate the bacteria.” The values of the blood tests did not change then, which did not reveal leucocytosis, so there was no new infection. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation has been resumed, the prognosis remains reserved and the Pope’s condition is complex. Francis remains ever vigilant.
