In the following lines, I am going to assign myself the reflection that some fifty-something parents like me are experiencing and watching one of their children finish the school stage in person. This is because, with the Covid-19 pandemic, older children did not have that possibility.
In my case, as I have mentioned on previous occasions, I have three daughters, aged 21, 18 and 14, respectively, and in 2020, when my eldest daughter was finishing her school stage, we were in Peru and the world in general in the midst of a pandemic.
While now in Buenos Aires-Argentina, I am a silent witness to the end of Fátima’s school stage. She has spent the last three years at the Buen Ayre school. For this reason, together with her friends, they have had and have various associated activities.
For example, the farewell, on their last day of classes, and the delivery of the baton to the class of 2025. In which all teachers and students participate, starting with the girls in first grade. Also, the graduation party or gala, as this event is known here. Four days ago, the Thanksgiving Mass, which their class shared with the parents.
Likewise, these days, the entire batch or class is on a mission or sharing with a community on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Finally, next week will be their graduation with a cap, gown and everything else.
How did time pass? At what point did you grow up? It seems like yesterday when we took you to kindergarten, when you played with dolls, when you made your first communion and a few years later your confirmation. Being witness to that the memories (photos and videos) and those kept in my mind and heart.
Fatima, now you are starting your university years, and it is the first step in your adult life, so I suggest you always keep in mind…
- You are an extraordinary human being, above all things.
- Don’t lose that smile and natural spark, it is your powerful weapon.
- If for some reason you fall, stumble or make a mistake, get up as quickly as possible and keep going.
- Keep cultivating that friendship, of the friend who never fails you, JESUS, and always thank him for all the gifts he has given you.
- Remember that the Virgin of Buen Ayre has a ship in one hand. Now you will have the helm of your ship. Always choose the best possible path in freedom.
- We will always be here, your mother and I, to help you.
- Finally, you have all the necessary tools to “succeed in life”, always deploy yourself by serving others.
And as the lyrics of Juanjo García Hervás’ song say, God will take you “In the palm of his hand”
“… May the sun always shine on your face
And make your smile shine brighter.
May the rain always fall on your field
And may you lose your fear of crying.
And may the people you love remain by your side
And may God take you in the palm of his hand.
And until we meet again, take care of yourself, my girl
And may God take you in the palm of his hand”
So cheer up, my girl. Go row against the current and out to sea, may the winds always take you to a safe harbor!
