Leo XIV: “I am not a politician, I speak of the Gospel”
Leo XIV begins his most ambitious journey with a clear warning: he is not a politician, but he will not remain silent in the face of conflict
The plane had barely been in the air for an hour when one of the most powerful messages of Leo XIV’s pontificate began to take shape. En route to Algiers, the first stop on his apostolic journey through Africa, the Pope transformed a routine gesture—greeting the journalists on board—into a declaration of principles: his voice does not belong to politics, but neither will he remain indifferent to the suffering of the world.
In that close, almost intimate encounter with the approximately seventy journalists who accompanied him, the Pope responded to the recent criticism leveled against him from the international political sphere. He did so without direct confrontation, but with a clarity that left no room for doubt: “I am not a politician,” he stated, distancing himself from any attempt to confine his role to ideological debates.
A voice that makes people uncomfortable, but doesn’t stop.
Leo XIV did not shy away from the heart of the matter. Addressing those who use religious language for political purposes, he warned of the risk of “abusing” the message of the Gospel. Its mission, he insisted, is different: to denounce war, promote peace, and advocate for dialogue between nations.
Far from softening his stance, the Pope reaffirmed his intention to continue speaking “loud and clearly” against armed conflicts. Not as a political leader, but as a spiritual authority appealing to the global conscience. In an international context marked by tensions and confrontations, his message resonates as an uncomfortable, yet necessary, counterpoint.
Africa as a setting and symbol
It is no coincidence that these words were spoken precisely at the start of his trip to Africa. The continent, with its contrasts and challenges, becomes the stage where the Pope wants to embody this call for peace and understanding.
The trip—the longest of his pontificate so far—is not just a diplomatic or pastoral mission. It is also a declaration of intent: to be present where conflicts, inequality, and religious tensions demand more than just speeches.
Beyond politics, but at the heart of the world
Leo XIV thus draws a clear line: he will not participate in political disputes, but neither will he renounce influencing them through ethics and faith. His position does not seek power, but rather conscience.
In times when words often divide, the Pope advocates for a language that seeks to unite. And he does so from a unique position: that of someone who does not govern countries, but who does challenge those who do.
The journey has only just begun. But their message has already landed.
Greetings to the journalists:

Good morning, good morning everyone!
Welcome aboard! I am happy to greet you all this morning.
Let me say a few words at the outset. This journey, which is very special for several reasons, was supposed to be the first of my pontificate. As early as last May, I had said that on my first journey, I would like to visit Africa. Several people immediately suggested Algeria because of Saint Augustine, as you know. I am indeed very happy to visit once again the land of Saint Augustine. He represents a very important bridge in interreligious dialogue, and he is deeply loved in his homeland, as we will see. Having the opportunity to visit the places associated with the life of Saint Augustine, where he was bishop in the city of Hippo, now known as Annaba, is truly a blessing for me personally. I believe it is also a blessing for the Church and for the world, because we must always seek bridges to build peace and reconciliation. This journey, then, truly represents a valuable opportunity to continue with the same voice, with the same message, that we wish to convey: to promote peace, reconciliation, respect and consideration for all peoples. Therefore, welcome to all of you. I am happy to greet you! Have a safe journey, and thank you for the service you offer. Thank you!
