Learning to See the Passion with the Eyes of the Heart

Lent is not a remembrance of the past, but a school for learning to live like Christ

Learning to See the Passion with the Eyes of the Heart

There is a superficial way to experience  Holy Week : to see it as a cultural tradition, a family custom, or a succession of liturgical celebrations. But the Church has always taught something much deeper:  Lent  is a spiritual school that prepares the heart to understand the greatest mystery of Christianity, the Passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

If you want to help a friend live through this time, it’s not enough to explain rules or practices. You have to invite them to  enter into the mystery .

Because the cross is not understood with reason alone: it is understood with the heart.

“The cross is the school of love.”
—  John Paul II

1. Lent is a call to conversion

The Church establishes forty days of preparation before Easter, recalling the  forty days that Christ spent in the desert  before beginning his public mission.

In the Bible, the desert is the place where distractions disappear and the soul is left before God.

There, man discovers what is truly in his heart.

“Know thyself and thou shalt know God.”
—  Augustine of Hippo

That’s why Lent isn’t a sad time. It’s a time  for honest reflection . It’s a time to look at your own life with sincerity and ask yourself: what place does God have in my life?

The Church proposes this time as an invitation to return to Him.

“God never tires of forgiving; it is we who tire of asking for forgiveness.”
—  Francis

2. The spiritual language of Lent

From the earliest centuries, Christian tradition has pointed out three specific paths to living Lent:

  • prayer
  • fast
  • alms or charity

These are not mere ascetic practices. They are three movements of the heart.

Prayer   leads us to God. Fasting   frees us from selfishness. Charity opens   us to our neighbor .

“Prayer expands the heart until it is capable of receiving God.”
—  Mother Teresa

Fasting, for example, is not a spiritual diet. It is a reminder that human beings do not live by material things alone.

“We fast from food to satisfy the soul.”
—  John Chrysostom

When someone discovers the profound meaning of these practices, they understand that Lent is not deprivation, but  inner liberation .

3. Contemplate the Passion

The  Passion of Christ  is the center of the Christian faith. It is not only the story of a man unjustly condemned, but the revelation of how God loves.

Every moment of the Gospel narrative reveals something of the heart of Christ.

In  Gethsemane , we see his inner struggle.
In the  unjust trial , his silence.
On the  cross , his forgiveness.

“Look at the Crucifix and you will see how much God loves you.”
—  Francis of Assisi

The cross is scandalous to human logic. But it is precisely there that God’s radical love is revealed.

“The measure of love is to love without measure.”
—  Bernard of Clairvaux

Christ does not respond to hatred with hatred.
He does not respond to violence with violence.

Respond with love.

4. To live the Easter Triduum

The heart of  Holy Week  is the  Easter Triduum , which begins on Holy Thursday and culminates on Easter.

These three days contain the essence of Christianity.

Holy Thursday: love that serves

At the  Last Supper , Christ instituted the Eucharist and washed the feet of his disciples.

God kneels before man.

“Being Christian is not about an idea, but about an encounter with a Person.”
—  Benedict XVI

Good Friday: the love that is given

The cross is not an accident in the life of Christ. It is the culmination of his self-giving.

“When you look at the Crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loves you.”
—  Josemaría Escrivá

There Christ forgives even those who crucify him.

“Father, forgive them.”

It is the moment where love triumphs over hate.

Holy Saturday: the silence of God

Holy Saturday is one of the most profound days of the liturgical year.

Christ lies in the tomb.
Everything seems to be over.

But God’s silence is never absence. It is preparation.

“God speaks in the silence of the soul.”
—  Mother Teresa

Easter Sunday: the victory of love

The Resurrection reveals the meaning of everything that happened.

The cross was not the end. It was the path.

“Christ is risen: everything changes.”
—  John Paul II

5. The cross also explains our life

The Passion is not just a story from the past. It is also a mirror of the human experience.

We all know suffering, injustice, betrayal, or loneliness.

Christ has gone through all of that.

“Suffering passes; having suffered for love remains.”
—  Mother Teresa

That’s why Christianity doesn’t promise a life without the cross. But it promises something much greater:

that no cross is useless when it is joined to that of Christ.

“In the evening of life we will be judged on love.”
—  John of the Cross

Teaching how to follow Christ

If you had to teach a friend just one thing during Lent, perhaps it would be this:

The Christian faith is not about admiring Christ from afar.
It is about  following him .

Follow Him in forgiveness.
Follow Him in surrender.
Follow Him in love.

“He who does not live to serve, does not deserve to live.”
—  Mother Teresa

Lent is the path that leads to that decision.

Because when someone truly understands the  Passion of Christ , they discover something that changes their entire life:

God didn’t just love us in theory.
He loved us to the point of death on the cross.
