Funeral of Pope Francisco on April 26th in the Plaza de San Pedro
The rite of acknowledgment of the death of the Pope

According to the provisions of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis (nos 21-40), late this Monday 21st April, Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Camarlengo of the Holy Roman Church, presided over the rite of the recognition of death and the placement of the body of the Pope in his coffin.
The body of the late Pope Francisco will be transported to the Basilica of San Pedro el Wednesday at 9:00 am to veil his funeral, which will take place on Saturday at 10:00 hrs.
The Press Office of the Holy See announced on Tuesday that Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the Cardinal College, will preside over the funeral mass, which will be concelebrated by Patriarchs, Cardinals, Arzobispos, Obispos, and priests from all over the world.
The Eucharistic celebration will conclude with the Ultima Commendatio and the Valedictio, which mark the beginning of the Novemdiales, or new days of mourning and celebrations for the eternal rest of the soul of Pope Francisco.
The body of the late Pope will be moved to the Basilica de San Pedro and the Basilica de Santa María la Mayor for his burial.
Previously, the miracles, the coffin with the Pope’s body, will be transported from the capital of the Casa Santa Marta to the Basilica of San Pedro. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camarlengo of the Santa Iglesia Romana, will preside over the rite of translation on April 23, which will begin at 9:00 am with a moment of prayer.

The procession will pass through the Plaza de Santa Marta and the Plaza de los Protomártires Romanos, following the Press Office of the Holy See.
The procession will continue through the Arch of the Bells past the Plaza de San Pedro and will enter the Vatican Basilica through the central door.
At the Altar of Confession, the Cardinal Camarlengo will preside over the Liturgy of the Word, among which the visits to the body of the Roman Pontiff will begin.
On the 10th of the morning, the first day of New Year’s Eve, the exequial Mass of Pope Francisco will be celebrated at the Basilica, according to the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis. The exequial liturgy will be presided over by the Cardinal Dean King. Subsequently, the coffin will be transported to the Basilica of San Pedro and, from there, to the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor for burial.
On the next Saturday, April 26, 2025, on the 10th of the morning, the first New Year’s Day, in the Basilica of San Pedro, the Exequial Mass of Pope Francisco will be celebrated, according to the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis.
This was announced by the Workshop for Liturgical Celebrations, informing that the exequial liturgy will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the Cardinal College.
At the end of the Eucharistic celebration, there will be the Last Commendation and the Valedict. Next, the Pope’s coffin will be moved to the Basilica of San Pedro and from there to the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor for burial.
