Father Ángel Espinosa de los Monteros: The Mass is an appointment with God

A daily and invaluable appointment

Prado Museum

Father Ángel Espinosa de los Monteros brings to Exaudi readers in his Reflections section the topic “The Mass, an appointment with God.”

***

I am continually asked what mass is and why go every day instead of just fulfilling the Sunday obligation.

I’m writing a book about the mass, but I’ll try to explain what the mass is in a few minutes. The mass is, in essence, an appointment with God, the most important of all. Imagine that I tell you that I have an appointment with the Pope in Rome or with the president of the business community in New York; everyone would think it’s something great. But the reality is that I have a daily appointment with God, my father, my friend, my brother, my model, my path, my truth, my life, the air I breathe, my food, my forgiveness, and my mercy.

There is no more important quote than this. Earthly dates can be about friendship, money or work and are momentary. On the other hand, an appointment with God has a much greater value. The mass can be compared to any important appointment: you arrive, you prepare, and upon entering you greet your host with kind words. Then, at the table, a dialogue begins where both talk and listen to each other.
