Family Valued: An international appeal for the family

An international call to rediscover the beauty, value, and importance of the family in today's society

Family Valued: An international appeal for the family

One book, nine countries and 44 authors, all convinced of the indispensability of family: The “Family Valued” project promotes the beauty and liveability of the family.

The project comprises books in several languages, a multilingual platform for news on family matters and, at the end of the year, a range of counselling services for families in German-speaking countries.

The book is designed as a guide for engaged couples and families with children ranging from babies to teenagers.

Forty-four authors from nine countries discuss the rediscovery of family life, its challenges, and possible solutions. Six chapters deal with family and society, work-life balance, couplehood and parenthood, care and inclusion, and practical tips for everyday family life.

The authors have very different professional, family and presumably also ideological backgrounds. They were selected based on their appreciation of the family – regardless of their marital status or family circumstances – their professionalism within their respective fields, and their media presence in books and on social media. They include scientists, entrepreneurs, fathers and mothers, family activists, educators, psychologists, therapists, book authors, bloggers and many more.

Their common concern is for the well-being of families and for promoting them as an enrichment for all of society. The articles are less concerned with researching and analyzing the causes of the often-dismal circumstances of families in the Western world, and more focused on the family’s intrinsic beauty, importance and life-enhancing nature. Many of the authors share their own experiences and practical tips for combining family and career and achieving a positive family life for all concerned. In mostly short texts, they present their respective approaches and projects. Links and QR codes take the reader to the “Family Valued” online platform, and from there to the social media channels and other resources of the respective authors.

The great strength of “Family Valued” lies in the way it presents, in a digest format, many diverse voices on the topic of family and family life and then links those voices to further resources. In this way, every reader will find new and interesting information that can be deepened further as needed. If on the other hand, you expect in-depth treatment of the topics, you will find most of the articles rather disappointing. Instead, the book is designed to treat the topics briefly, and then to leave deeper analyses to the linked Internet resources. Moreover, the international perspective may be helpful to many readers, as it makes it clear that families all over the Western world and beyond are struggling with similar difficulties, and yet some have developed creative solutions.
