On this occasion, I want to share with you a beautiful phrase from Chesterton: “Those who speak against the family do not know what they do because they do not know what they undo.” This statement, although it seems like a simple play on words, is a reality as big as a cathedral. Attacking the family is an action of which many do not understand the true consequences.
Main attacks against the family
Today, the main attacks against the family come from various sources that seek to disintegrate the family structure. Saint John Paul II, in his first encyclical “Redemptor Hominis” and the post-synodal apostolic exhortation “Familiaris Consortio”, emphasizes the importance of the family in society. He reminds us that the future of the world and humanity necessarily passes through the family.
The role of the family
In the family, we learn to love, to serve, to forgive, to live together, to give in, to accompany and to care. Although school and university provide us with knowledge, it is in the family where we acquire fundamental values. Nowadays, access to information is easier than ever, but education in values remains a family responsibility.
Destruction of values
Currently, there are movements that seek to redefine traditional concepts such as marriage and family. Ideas are promoted that distance people from family and spiritual values, such as the acceptance of multiple genders and the disconnection of marriage from procreation. These ideologies attempt to replace the importance of children with the company of pets and justify abortion as a solution to unforeseen problems.
The importance of family
The family is the place where fundamental values such as faith and love are preserved. Although the Church and Christian groups play an important role in transmitting these values, it is within the family where they are lived and practiced daily. The future of humanity depends on the family, and attacks on it are often the result of ignorance of its importance.
Be family advocates
It is not enough to not attack the family; we must be active defenders of it. I invite you to become an apostle of the family, defending marriage, family values and life in all its stages. The family is a spiritual gym where we exercise virtues such as faith, love, forgiveness and charity. Let us do all the good we can, defending and promoting the family, and may God bless them always.
