Don’t you risk anything for your ideas? Then you’re worthless
Relativism and the value of truth
Due to the crisis of values and the lack of coherence, many people are unclear about the meaning of their lives and, therefore, don’t risk anything for their ideals, don’t fight for them because they are unclear about them, or change them frequently. This is yet another manifestation of subjectivism or relativism, which prevents people from distinguishing truth from falsehood, good from evil.
When you know the meaning of life, you must be consistent and have the courage to express yourself and live according to your principles and beliefs , without fear of the consequences. As Plato said, “If a man risks nothing for his ideas, either his ideas are worthless, or the man is worthless.” We have the right to freedom of expression and to live according to our convictions.
If we live with our backs turned to the truth, we end up making excuses . “If you don’t live as you think, you end up thinking as you live.” Truth is the reality of nature, which doesn’t depend on the majority, nor is it found in the common denominator of different opinions. The fact that millions of people share the same vices doesn’t turn those vices into virtues; the fact that they share many mistakes doesn’t make those mistakes truths.
Relativism is not so much a philosophical system as a way of thinking that avoids speaking in terms of true or false , since it does not recognize any instance of objective validity regarding judgments that refer to realities that transcend what each person can see and touch: God, the soul, even the most intimate goal of love. Today, it is a stance toward life that has become a common practice in culture, permeating social relations among people.
This attitude also entails a way of living or making decisions that reveals a fundamental bewilderment in the face of reality : since I cannot know anything definitively, I also cannot make decisions that involve an unquestionable and permanent commitment. Everything can change, everything is provisional.
Truth is inherently kind , and yet we can sometimes defend it in a rather unpleasant way. It’s true that some truths make those who hear them uncomfortable, and that living a consistent life isn’t easy for anyone; but this doesn’t diminish the fact that truth has an inherent power of attraction that we must strive not to hide.
To reveal the splendor of truth, it is essential, first and foremost, to make the effort to seek it, to know it, and to contemplate it, also through study and formation. If one truly loves truth, it is easier to express it with the gift of tongues and to make it visible through one’s life.
