In the face of recent laws in Spain that affect life and family, there is a legal alternative that defends religious freedom, fundamental rights, and a lifestyle following faith. In recent years, regulations have been approved that have transformed society, such as the increase in abortions, the legalization of euthanasia, and the implementation of hormonal treatments in minors without parental consent. These situations have generated uncertainty and helplessness in many families.
To offer support, the Association of Christian Lawyers works to defend these fundamental values. We have spoken with José María Fernández, a member of the association, to learn more about their work
When was the Association of Christian Lawyers founded, and what are its main services?
The Association of Christian Lawyers began its work in 2008 and, since 2013-2014, we have taken on more cases. We continue to work on these issues and have created the Spanish Foundation of Christian Lawyers.
Our services include free legal assistance for cases that align with our principles: the defense of life from conception to natural death, support for the natural family and the protection of religious freedom.
How have laws such as the euthanasia law and the trans law impacted the work of the Association?
The approval of these laws has significantly increased our work. For example, the euthanasia law has brought with it an increase in cases that need legal intervention. Court decisions around this regulation will be crucial to define precedents in future situations, especially when there are doubts about compliance with the legal requirements by patients.
What do you advise parents who face hormonal treatments in minors without their consent?
The first thing is that they do not distance themselves from their children; they must continue to love and support them at all times. In addition, we recommend that they seek our legal assistance. We believe that in cases of gender dysphoria, puberty should be allowed to take its natural course before making irreversible medical decisions. Hormonal treatments in pre-pubescent children should be restricted as much as possible.
This summer, cases of relatives affected by assisted suicide have increased. What can they do?
Unfortunately, the advance of euthanasia reflects the growth of the culture of death. We ask these families to contact us to discuss their case. We can question subjective aspects, such as the patient’s capacity to consent, or objective aspects, such as compliance with legal requirements.
Thank God, we have achieved success in these types of cases, helping many families find legal and ethical solutions. We are here to provide the necessary support in these difficult times.
