Current Status of the College of Cardinals

Electors and Non-Electors Appointed by Each Pope

Current Status of the College of Cardinals
Vatican News

The College of Cardinals, composed of cardinals of the Catholic Church, plays a fundamental role in the election of the Pope and in advising the Pontiff on matters of great importance. Its composition varies according to the appointments made by each Pope, distinguishing between cardinal electors and non-electors.

Current Composition of the College of Cardinals

As of December 7, 2024, following the Consistory convened by Pope Francis, the College of Cardinals is composed of 253 cardinals, of whom 138 are electors and 114 are non-electors.

Appointment Criteria

Cardinal electors are those under the age of 80 and are entitled to participate in the Conclave for the election of the Pope. On the other hand, non-elector cardinals, those over 80 years of age, do not participate in the papal election but continue to perform consultative and advisory functions.

Appointments by Each Pope

  • Pope Francis: Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis has convened several Consistories, expanding the geographic and cultural representation of the College of Cardinals. For example, in the Consistory of December 7, 2024, 21 new cardinals were created, of whom 18 are electors and 3 are non-electors.
  • Pope Benedict XVI: During his pontificate, Benedict XVI appointed 90 cardinals in five Consistories, of whom 39 are electors and 30 are non-electors.
  • Pope John Paul II: During his long pontificate, John Paul II appointed 231 cardinals from some 70 countries in nine Consistories, significantly expanding the global representation of the College of Cardinals.
