A few days ago, Rafa Nadal announced his retirement, and all Spaniards, like in the Mecano song, felt the same for once: gratitude and pride. Gratitude for every moment of dedication, for every match in which he demonstrated his unbreakable fighting spirit, and for representing us with a humility and strength that have crossed borders. Pride, because Rafa is not only a sporting reference, but also an example of perseverance, discipline and humanity. His legacy, beyond the trophies and titles, remains in everyone’s hearts as that of a champion who, in every victory and every defeat, taught us that effort and perseverance are true marks of greatness.
That image of effort and success can be the push a teenager needs to put aside the screen and face a day of training, or the stimulus that inspires a child to dream big. The influence of those who have done their mission in life well is invaluable. Having role models that inspire us and give us courage is essential.
This same idea can be applied to our children through the example of the saints. Do they know who the champions of the “Heavenly House” are? Wouldn’t it be important for them to know these heroes of faith, to see their example and be inspired by their achievements and virtues?
All Saints’ Day is approaching, a perfect opportunity to remind them who our true champions of faith are. Perhaps we remember a beloved family member or a saint proclaimed by the Church, taking advantage of the moment to talk about them and what they represent.
We want to encourage everyone to celebrate this date with enthusiasm and adapting to current circumstances. As a mother of a large family, my suggestions are simple and accessible: practical decorations, realistic ideas, and materials you probably already have at home.
Creative and Simple Costumes
At Holywins, the costume parade has become a tradition. This year, both parents and children can get involved. It doesn’t have to be too complicated, since with small modifications to the costumes we already have, we can create outfits for saints and biblical characters.
Saint Helena: Just add a cardboard cross to the Little Red Riding Hood costume to transform it.
Saint Nicholas: Red suspenders, jeans, a white polo shirt, and a red hat will bring this beloved saint to life.
Saint Margaret of Scotland: A book in her hand and a scarf as a headband can add a special touch.
Saint Michael the Archangel: With a shield, helmet, and sword (perhaps toy), complemented by Christmas wings, we have the archangel.
It would be ideal for each child to explain why he or she chose his or her saint and what quality he or she admires. Not only does this enrich the experience, but it helps the values of each saint inspire everyone present.
Themed Snack
To give this celebration a special touch, a creative snack can be a fun way to learn more about the saints. Here are some ideas that transform everyday ingredients into references to our heroes of faith:
Water of Saint John the Baptist: Pitchers of cold water or bottles of water in memory of Saint John, who baptized Jesus.
Guacamole of Saint Juan Diego: Nachos and guacamole in honor of Saint Juan Diego, the indigenous man who witnessed the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Fish of Saint Peter: Saltine crackers in the shape of a fish, representing the “fisher of men.”
Trumpets of San Gabriel: Use cone-shaped snacks to evoke the archangel Gabriel, the messenger of God.
St. Cecilia’s Keys: Create a “piano” with wafer cookies and chocolate flakes in honor of the patron saint of music.
Saints’ Crowns: Round cookies represent the halos of saints.
St. Benedict’s Tonsure: Chocolate donuts that symbolize the tonsure on the crown of the head of Benedictine monks.
St. Therese’s Little Flower: Red jelly beans in the shape of a flower in memory of St. Therese of Lisieux.
These ideas can make snack time not only delicious, but also an opportunity to learn more about each saint and their stories. This way, we can all celebrate All Saints’ Day in a special, educational, and fun way for the family.
Let’s celebrate our champions of faith and enjoy this holiday with Holywins!
