China: Ordination and Appointment of a Fifth Bishop
In the Framework of the Provisional Agreement on the Appointment of Bishops in the Country

“In response to journalists’ questions, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni” explained that today, July 28, 2021, “the Liturgy of Episcopal Ordination took place in the Cathedral of Pingliang, Chinese province of Gansu, of the Revered Anthony Li Hui, appointed by the Holy Father Co-Adjutor of Pingliang on January 11, 2021. Monsignor Li is the fifth Chinese Bishop appointed and ordained in virtue of the Provisional Agreement on the Appointment of Bishops in China.”
Vatican News stated that, according to the Chinese Catholic Church’s Website the Ordination ceremony was presided over by the Bishop of Kunming, province of Yunnan, Monsignor Joseph Ma Yinglin. The site also states that Reverend Li was born in 1972 in the county of Mei, province of Shaanxi. He entered the Diocesan Seminary of Pingliang in 1990 and graduated from the National Seminary of the Catholic Church in China. He has been a priest since 1996.
The Holy See Press Office reported last May 17 that the Pope appointed Reverend Stephen Chow Sau-yan Bishop of the Diocese of Hong Kong, up to now, he has been Provincial of the Province of the Society of Jesus.
Chow was born on August 7, 1959 in Hong Kong. After his pre-University studies, he received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota in the United States. He entered the Society of Jesus on September 27, 1984.
