In his recent work published by Romana Editorial in Spain, Pope Francis offers a profound reflection on the value of sports in life and society. With an accessible and sincere approach, this book invites readers to discover how sporting principles can transform not only personal life but also the social environment in which we live.
Throughout 176 pages, the Pope acts as an exceptional coach, providing a “manual” that guides athletes—from consecrated champions to children and young people, including those with physical or intellectual disabilities. His message seeks to resonate in all hearts, inspiring each one to find their place in the world of sports.
Divided into eleven chapters, the text addresses fundamental questions such as the role of sports in education, its ability to express talent and build communities, as well as the sacrifices and challenges that it entails. The Pope stresses the importance of teamwork and respect for fair play, as well as presenting sport as a healthy lifestyle accessible to all. He also underlines its potential as a messenger of peace at international events and competitions.
In the words of the Pope: “Sports champions, as well as artists and scientists, demonstrate that great achievements are not achieved overnight. And if this is true for sport, art and culture, it is even more true for what really matters in life: love and faith. To grow in faith and love, we must have perseverance and always move forward.”
This volume has the collaboration of Monsignor Dario Edoardo Viganò, Vice-Chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences of the Holy See, and the journalist Valerio Alessandro Cassetta. The prologue is by the renowned coach Carlo Ancelotti.
