Ash Wednesday: The Beginning of a Time of Spiritual Renewal
A time of reflection, conversion and spiritual renewal

Ash Wednesday, like every year, marks the beginning of a special time for all Christians: Lent. It is a day of prayer, reflection, fasting and, above all, of inner change. This significant day begins the journey towards Easter, a period of preparation that aims to prepare our hearts to live Holy Week in depth.
What does Ash Wednesday mean?
This day is not just about receiving ashes on the forehead. It goes back to the 40-day fast that Jesus Christ lived in the desert, a time in which, after being baptized, he withdrew to pray and fast, facing the temptations of the devil. Christians consider this time as an opportunity to emulate the spiritual strength of Jesus and reflect on our own ability to resist temptation.
Ash Wednesday reminds us that, like Christ, we must seek spiritual growth, a true fasting from sin. This is the first and most important purpose of Lent: to consciously distance ourselves from evil and from the sin that distances us from God.
The Inner Purpose: What Am I Going to Do During Lent?
The act of placing the ashes is only the beginning. It is an external sign of an inner change. The true challenge of Lent is to ask ourselves the question: What am I going to offer during these 40 days to get closer to God? What can I do to prepare for Holy Week and live it with true fervor?
Lent is not reduced to depriving ourselves of external things like a soda or a coffee. These gestures are symbolic, but the true fast must be that of our attitudes and behaviors. The first fast is to say “no” to sin and to everything that distances us from the will of God. Making a resolution to change something in our lives that makes us better Christians and better people is the true objective.
How to Strengthen Our Spirit: Voluntary Deprivations and Prayer
Just like Jesus, who retreated into the desert to strengthen his spirit, we too must seek ways to strengthen our will and spirituality. Voluntary deprivations, such as fasting, are powerful tools to master our desires and draw closer to God. It is not just about giving up things we like, but choosing to deprive ourselves of them in order to strengthen our will.
In addition to deprivations, prayer is essential. Throughout Lent, it is important to establish concrete purposes in our prayer life, such as attending Mass more frequently, praying the Rosary, or committing to some apostolate. Prayer is the key to staying strong in our spiritual struggle.
Commitment to the Eucharist and the Apostolate
One of the best ways to live this time of Lent is through the Eucharist, which strengthens our relationship with God. In addition, we must commit ourselves to serving others, whether it be visiting the sick, helping the needy, or performing works of charity. This is a time to go out of ourselves and live love for our neighbor in a concrete way.
Living Lent with Purpose
This Ash Wednesday is not just about receiving ashes. It is an invitation to a deep commitment to God. Make a serious resolution to abandon sin, strengthen our will through voluntary deprivation, and increase our life of prayer and apostolate.
May this time of Lent truly be a period of transformation, so that we can live Holy Week with a renewed heart full of fervor. Let us do all the good we can and may God always bless us!
