Antoni Gaudí Takes Another Step Toward the Altar: Declared Venerable by the Church
Pope Francis Recognizes the Heroic Virtues of the Catalan Architect, Whose Faith and Creative Genius Blended in a Life Devoted to God and Sacred Art

The figure of Antoni Gaudí, the Catalan genius who left an indelible mark on 20th-century architecture and spirituality, has been recognized by the Church with the title of Venerable. On April 13, 2025, Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing the heroic virtues of the creator of the Sagrada Familia, an artist whose faith deeply informed his work.
Faith and Art, Inseparable in His Life
Gaudí was not only an innovator of forms and a lover of nature but also a deeply religious man. His unique style, which integrated Christian symbols with organic and geometric elements, was an expression of a worldview marked by the contemplation of God in beauty.
“The great temple of the Sagrada Familia is not just an architectural work, it is a catechesis of stone, a hymn to the glory of God,” stated those promoting his cause for canonization.
A process that advances
The Venerable Declaration represents the official recognition that Antoni Gaudí lived the Christian virtues in an exemplary manner. This step is key in the process toward his beatification, which will now require the approval of a miracle attributed to his intercession.
The cause was initiated in 2003 by the Archdiocese of Barcelona, and the diocesan phase was closed in 2010. Since then, work has been underway in Rome with the presentation of the positio, an exhaustive compilation of testimonies and documents that attest to his holiness.
A Model for the Contemporary World
Gaudí, who died in 1926 after being struck by a tram, lived his final years with humility, completely dedicated to the construction of the expiatory church of the Sagrada Familia, in which he saw a divine mission rather than a professional commission.
His life inspires believers and non-believers today, for his dedication, his search for beauty as a path to God, and his commitment to truth. In the words of the postulator of the cause, Bishop David Abadías, “Gaudí is an example of how human work and creativity can be sanctified when one lives in union with God.”
