The Advent Wreath: A Symbol of Hope and Preparation

Discover the deeper meaning of each element in the Advent wreath and how this tradition spiritually prepares us for Christmas

The Advent wreath is a Christian symbol that marks the beginning of the Advent period, a time of spiritual preparation for Christmas. This tradition consists of a wreath made of green branches on which four candles are placed. Each candle represents one of the four Sundays of Advent.

Meaning of the Elements

  1. Green Branches: Symbolize hope and eternal life, reminding us of God’s promise of new life through Jesus.
  2. Circular Shape: Represents God’s eternity, without beginning or end.
  3. Four Candles: Three purple and one pink. The purple candles symbolize penitence and preparation, while the pink candle, lit on the third Sunday, symbolizes joy and happiness at the approaching birth of Christ.

Lighting the Candles

Each Sunday of Advent, a candle is lit, starting with a purple one. On the third Sunday, known as Gaudete, the pink candle is lit. Finally, on the fourth Sunday, all the candles are lit, representing the light that comes into the world with the birth of Jesus.

The Advent wreath is a powerful tool for family prayer and reflection, helping us to focus on the true meaning of Christmas.
