We Mourn the Murder of Fr. Marcelo Pérez: A Cry for Justice and Peace

A life dedicated to service and justice in the midst of violence

Cardinal Felipe Arizmendi has expressed his deep sorrow following the murder of Fr. Marcelo Pérez, an indigenous priest of the diocese of San Cristóbal de las Casas. The tragic event occurred on Sunday morning in the Cuxtitali neighborhood, just after the priest celebrated Mass. The Cardinal, who ordained Fr. Marcelo, as a priest, will attend his funeral on Monday, with a saddened heart at the loss of a man committed to justice and peace among indigenous peoples.

A Committed Priest

Fr. Marcelo Pérez was one of the first Indigenous priests ordained in this diocese. He dedicated his life to serving his community, especially in Simojovel and Pantelhó, where he accompanied victims of internal violence. His focus was not on partisan politics but on the struggle to live the values of the Kingdom of God in the communities: truth, life, holiness, grace, justice, love, and peace.

During internal power struggles in Pantelhó, Fr. Marcelo remained steadfast in his conviction to foster respect and dialogue among all groups, defending the displaced and seeking peaceful solutions. He was a priest deeply focused on his vocation, known for his prayer and his closeness to the Tabernacle. His pride in his origin in San Andrés Larráinzar and his ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds reflect his inclusive spirit and dedication to the well-being of his people.

A Call to Reflection

The murder of Fr. Marcelo is a clear indicator of the climate of violence that has permeated Chiapas and much of the country. Social decomposition, manifested in the destruction of the family and the impunity of armed groups, is a reality that cannot be ignored. Cardinal Arizmendi points out that, although not everything is the responsibility of the government, it is evident that both the government and civil society, including the churches, are overwhelmed by this growing violence.

This tragic event should lead us to deep reflection. Believers, as well as those in power, must unite in the search for strategies to dismantle the armed groups that are causing so much harm to communities.

In the midst of this painful loss, Cardinal Arizmendi concludes with a message of hope: in faith, we hope that Fr. Marcelo rests in peace with the Risen Christ, because those who suffer to build justice and peace are blessed.

The memory of Fr. Marcelo Pérez and his legacy call us all to work for a more just and peaceful world, where violence has no place and where every individual, regardless of their origin, can live with dignity and hope.
